It was a dominate display by Griffith High's leaguetag and rugby league sides, as they flexed their combined muscle to rack up a combined for and against of 130-10 for the second round of the competition.

All eyes were on Griffith High as to how dominant it could be, with all questions answered inside 20 minutes as they blew a shell-shocked Marian side off the park, who suffered big fall from grace for Marian after its shock last-gasp win over Wade High in the first round.

Griffith High coach Shayne Vonbun said he could not have asked more from his side as they followed their game plan to the letter.

“I was very impressed with the guys’ efforts, we wanted to start well and complete our first five sets and we did that and scored the first five tries and we starved them off the ball,” Vonbun said.

“The guys got their confidence up because of that and from there the structure was really good.”

Without the ball Griffith High were just as impressive, as they showed superior line-speed for much of the game to strangle Marian out of the contest.

“That was our main focus before the game, working for each other, putting in a big effort because we had not done anything at training in regards to defence,” Vonbun said.

“I just asked them to put in the effort and put their bodies in front of Marian and put them on their back and move up and get in their face as much as possible.”

The writing was on the wall early as the weight of possession for Griffith High saw early tries to Gospel Toru, Patular Mataora and Sonny Tupu, and when lock Ben Martin latched onto a well-timed pass, the score blew out to 22-0 in a heartbeat.

Nothing went right for Marian, even when they worked their way into favourable field position, a simple mistake would release the pressure valve.

Griffith High started to become sloppy with ball in hand, but given the side was up by close to 30, the damage done was minimal.

But rather than allow Marian to climb back into the game, Griffith High poured on the punishment in the shadows of half-time as their back row continued to create havoc around the edges of the ruck as they led 46-0 at half-time.

While the result was in the bag, Griffith High refused to let Marian to score a consolation try as its defensive wall held firm, despite some commendable attacking raids.

Despite at times getting the bulk of possession through back-to-back penalties, Marian was unable to crack the line as Griffith High hooker Phillip Teopenga put the final nail in the coffin.
