Jason Coyle got Va Pensiero to the Golden Slipper but still believes his best as a three-year-old might not come until the autumn.
The son of Stratum has won once in five starts and returns in the $125,000 San Domenico Stakes (1100 metres) at Rosehill.
"His trials have been good and he has relaxed a bit better than he did as a two-year-old,'' Coyle said. "He is mentally a lot better and almost there, but physically he still has a little way to go and might take until the autumn. He has raced against this company right through his career and it will be interesting to see how he measures up against the Darley horses [Sidestep and Kuroshio].
"The [outside] barrier is a massive concern because it is hard to know where he will get in the race. He has the speed to lead but probably not from out there.''
Va Pensiero has run second to Whittington and beat I'm All The Talk to suggest he has the speed to make his presence felt.
