WILLIAM Hannon, Sean Royal, Stevie Mathews and Kyle Charles were given a rare insight into the next level of rugby league that awaits them, when they took on the Melbourne Storm under 17s and 18s sides last week in Albury.
Despite already making an elite level as part of the Country Rugby League (CRL) side, the boys from the bush proved to be no match for the Storm as they defeated the locals in both of their games.
Boasting eight players that have significant Toyota Cup experience with the national side, the Storm used their size and skill advantag to captalise on any CRL mistakes.
However, Matthews continued to throw himself into the contest as he came out unscathed after making a big hit that saw two players taken off with injuries after the tackle.
He continued to defend manfully throughout the game and proved a valuable player while also showing his ability in attack, while Royal played an impressive game and showed no fear against the huge opposition.
In the clash against the 18s, both Charles and Hannon played a great attacking game despite the later not getting much ball out on the wing.
However, once Hannon moved to fullback he was definitely in his comfort zone and ran the ball up without any apprehension.
The CRL boys played well as a team considering they have only trained together three times since selection in 2009, while the Storm have been training twice a week since October and stood out on the day.
This was a great experience for the local boys and it will help them prepare for the game against the Canberra Raiders on February 14.
