We’re not out to come last

25 Jan, 2012 06:00 AM
HAY Magpies coach Rene Woods is confident his side can continue to learn what it takes to succeed in Group 20 first grade, as he puts the club through a tough pre-season training program.

It was a steep learning curve for the Magpies in their first season in the top grade, with several lopsided results mixed in with some success, with their shock win over the then reigning premiers Waratah Tigers the highlight of 2011.

“It is hard training this far out from the competition opener, but we are striving to be in the best possible shape for our first game against Premiers West Wyalong, at the newly revamped Ron Crowe Oval, West Wyalong,” Woods said.

“The big boys are putting in, and I am pleased particularly with their efforts.”

Asked if last year’s captain-coach Gareth Price would return to the pack, Woods said it was likely they would retain their forward leader.

“We have the foundations of a good team, and with the anticipated return of former Welsh international Gareth Price for the year, and the addition of a few more good players, we are confident of putting a good squad together,” he said.

“Simon Parr has indicated he will be available for most of the season, depending on his work commitments, so that is a big plus for the Club.

“Everyone will start on even footing in 2012, and form at training and in the trials will determine first grade spots for the competition opener.”

Woods said he expected to add to his playing numbers in the coming weeks, with several players yet to sign for 2012.

“There are a couple of new (and old) blokes in town who haven’t fronted for training yet, but I intend to get onto them shortly and find out their intentions,” he said.

“One of the blokes played in a first grade NRL trial in 2009, and played alongside former Magpie Solo Alone at Penrith in the Toyota Cup.

“The other young bloke was a rep player in Group 8 under 18 competition, and he too has big wraps on his ability.

“I am excited by the young talent coming through.

“Players like Lloyd Schulz, Mitch Rosser, Ryan Gash, Corey Harrison, Patty Miller, Luke Deacon, Chris Payne who I had in the 18s a couple of years ago are on the verge of something big for the club, while Mick Fitzpatrick showed on occasions last year that he can be a big hitter like his uncle Mick (Fitzpatrick).

“Luke is off to Uni in Wollongong, but we hope to have him and Tommy Potter make a few appearances throughout the season.”
