Titans take on Griffith flavour

27 Jun, 2008 10:30 AM
THE Gold Coast Titans starting side will have a distinct Griffith flavour to it against the St George-Illawarra Dragons tonight, with Ben Jeffrey and Michael Henderson both getting the nod to start the game side by side.

The local connection to the NRL’s newest club has taken a while to come to fruition with Henderson out for just over a year with a leg injury.

But now fully healed, bullocking Henderson and speedster Jeffrey will look to be two of the spearheads against the Dragons at the formidable home ground of the Titans.

Henderson said age and circumstances had previously stood between him and the chance of playing with Jeffrey on a regular basis, with the two former Waratah juniors now getting the opportunity to push for the Titans first finals campaign.

“It’s very pleasing and proud to have two Griffith boys in the side, and both from the Waratahs originally,” Henderson said.

For the newly returned prop, the next four weeks are a golden opportunity to cement a run-on spot for the rest of the season, with injuries opening the door for a starting return earlier than he expected.

“I set myself about a month to try and get back in the starting side, but with a few injuries I am back there a bit earlier than I thought,” Henderson said.

“It looks like Bull (Luke Bailey) will be out for a while so the rest of the forwards will have to role up their sleeves and get stuck in.

“And then there is Aaron Cannings, and his broken fibula, and he looks to be out for a while.”

Late on Wednesday afternoon Cannings was officially ruled out for six weeks, while Bailey was still to have scans on his injured ankle to ascertain any damage.

With the recent spate of injures, Henderson dismissed suggestions the Titans may be susceptible to another late season collapse, saying the club is better prepared to get through the rigors of a full NRL season.

“Obviously having a few guys out isn’t great, but we have a bigger playing roster and more depth this year all we have to do is keep winning at home and win half of our away games,” he said.

However, Henderson said the side couldn’t worry about what players were not starting , but figure out how they were going to stop the Dragons pack with the rugged prop saying he is looking forward to taking on the likes of Jason Ryles, Beau Scott and Ben Creagh.

The assignment for Jeffrey is simple – keep travelling the upward curb of development that has seen the former Wests Tigers player start every game with the Titans this year.

Speaking to The Area News from the team’s temporary home at Coffs Harbour this week, Jeffrey said at the start of the season he didn’t think he would start every game, but said he was grateful for the opportunity.

Jeffrey said while his job has been made easier with the withdrawal of Matt Cooper through rep duty and Mark Gasnier with a back injury, he is not taking his job lightly saying the kicking game of Jamie Soward is a real weapon for the Dragons.

“He (Soward) can put a lot of pressure on opposing teams,

he’s got a really good kicking game, but we have to turn it on at the business end of the season,” he said.
