Support from the sideline

NEWLY re-elected Griffith Black and Whites president Joe Sergi has put a challenge out to the club's supporters, to make 2010 the season the first grade side gets back on its feet.

Sergi's call comes after three tough seasons for the proud club, with promising starts quickly falling away as a result of injuries, with the top grade often out of the finals race by mid- season.

However, signs the club is beginning to turn it around off the field are showing, with 17 committee members putting their hands up this year to help the club back to its glory days.

Sergi said the extended group of officials have already made things easier, but added the only other way the club would again be a powerhouse in the competition is if people started supporting the club from the sidelines rather than their lounge rooms.

"We're finding it easier already, we've done a few raffles and things like that and it's just getting done," Sergi said.

"We've got a committee there this year we can set it up as a working committee, for example, last year the president, treasurer and secretary were all in the canteen on a regular basis, we can't have that happen all of the time."

Sergi said the weight of expectation for the club to perform had begun to weigh him down in recent years, but said supporters could help out more than they could imagine by simply backing the playing group, with the club often having less supporters than visiting teams last year.

"Being a Griffith club, and Waratahs are probably in the same boat a bit, is that there is great expectation and little support or support that you don't see very often," he said.

"They (non-supporters) just want to throw their two-bobs worth in, they don't come to games and they expect the club to be up there (on the ladder) all the time, and it just can't happen like that.

"You've got to go through your hard times to get to the good times."

The club is expected to name its first grade coach for 2010 this week, ahead of a tough pre-season period where the initial success of the new-look Black and Whites will be manufactured.
