Storm brewing for Blueheelers

20 Jan, 2012 06:30 AM
IF THE Yenda Blueheelers get away to a flying start this Group 20 season, it may have something to do with Alex Korvo.

While the name may not jump out at you like Billy Slater, Cameron Smith or Cooper Cronk, but Korvo has been a big part for their success.

Ahead of their intensive pre-season training regime, Yenda co-coach Roy Romeo visited Korvo in his capacity as the Melbourne Storm’s strength and conditioning coach.

Romeo admitted he does not expect the same standards of his players this year, but said simple ideas such as bleeding for the cause can be used every day of the season.

“Myself Lance Poka, Steve (Richards) and Ben Vitucci went down to see him (Korvo) and see if we could get some ideas off him about pre-season.

“It’s just unbelievable how well set up they are down there and how well they look after the players.

“I don’t expect the same standards at our training of course, but like down there, if you don’t show a bit commitment and sacrifice then you’re not going to get the kind of results you want to.

“I told the guys last night (Tuesday) you have to be committed, I told them I can’t force them to run at training, they’re going to want to do it.”

For Vitucci the Melbourne trip was especially poignant according to Romeo, who reminded the talented playmaker a career in the NRL was still not out of the question.

“I said to Ben, have a look around at what kind of a set-up and how they train, this is what you have to strive for,” he said.

“I reminded him that he’s 19 years old and that he’s got he talent but he’s got to want it.”

Yenda held its first pre-season training of the new year

on Tuesday this week, as close to 40 players sweated it out at Ted Scobie Oval, as Romeo put the players through their paces.

“It was a pretty good turnout for the first week back after the new year, especially considering how hot it was and we didn’t hold back on them,” Romeo said.

Romeo and co-coach Steve Richards will be out to get the club back on the same page, after rumblings of discontent derailed the Blueheelers bid for the first grade premiership late last year.

But early indications are that all is right once again in the doghouse, and with the pending announcement of a new players signing with the club, officials are quietly confident of their chances in 2012.
