DOZENS of eager primary school students will get the chance to emulate their rugby league heroes tomorrow when the Griffith leg of the Trent Barrett Shield hits town.
Jubilee Oval will be filled with teams from across western Riverina, with the girls also getting their chance to shine in the increasingly popular leaguetag competition.
"Trent Barrett Shield being years three and four it's where you can really target the younger kids and this year will be one of the larger competitions we've had. We'll have 170 teams from around the Riverina," ARL Riverina development officer Dean Whymark said.
"There's going to be 80 schools and many of the students will probably never have played rugby league or leaguetag, so hopefully this day will spark their interest for the next few years."
With the Group 20 leaguetag competition now fully entrenched in the local sporting landscape, Whymark said carnivals such as tomorrow were an increasingly important part of identifying the next generation of first-grade players.
"We're starting to develop a pathway from seven years of age right through to first grade, so that has existed in the primary schools and we've been doing it a bit more in the high schools," he said.
"We're trying to make sure that, just like rugby league, there's a logical path for girls in leaguetag because obviously it's been supported massively on the weekend."
St Marys of Hay will again be one of the schools to watch out for in leaguetag, while Griffith North Public will be out to continue its strong reputation in Trent Barrett and Mortimer Shield competitions.
Games kick off at 9.50am with the finals beginning at 12.45pm ahead of presentations at 1.20pm at Jubilee Oval in Griffith.
