Parr confident of better year

08 Feb, 2012 05:30 AM
GRIFFITH Black and Whites president Steve Parr said the club is working overtime during its pre-season training to put the demons of recent seasons behind them.

The proud club has had little to celebrate for several years as a lack of player depth in key positions, and commitment to the cause has seen them miss out of on finals football regularly.

But Parr is confident new co-coaches Ben Mahon and Greg Borger have got what it takes to turn the side around, as they welcome back several familiar faces from 2011.

Brian Henderson has joined the club, with forward wrecking-ball Chris Latu and classy utility Steve Broome indicating they are all back at EW Moore Oval.

“He punches above his weight, but he’s a really important player for us to have at the club again,” Parr said of Broome.

“We’re in the market for a number seven at this stage, so we’re looking at that as well, but Luke Farmer will probably fill the sport for a while and see how we go.”

Borger is a key ingredient for the Black and Whites if they are again to be a title contender in the near future, with the passionate club man attempting to restore players’ pride in the jersey.

Parr said his messages in early pre-season are getting through to the players, as they look to put their bodies on the line against the best Group 20 has to offer.

But the club president put the call out for more players to put in the hard yards now, saying every missed training sessions give their opposition a small advantage.

Griffith is looking to add to its playing roster before its first round clash against the new joint-venture side the Bidgee Hurricanes, but when asked who the club was seeking to sign, Parr kept his cards close to his chest.

“We’re looking at a few other options from out of town,” he said.

“We’re talking to a few players about coming here and they sound interested at this stage but we’re keeping our options open.”

The Black and Whites junior Panthers will be begin training this week for all returning and interested players – February 9 at Jubilee Oval from 4.30pm, with players able to be registered on the spot.
