Parr calls the shots

NEW Griffith Black and Whites coach Steve Parr has vowed to go back to basics as he looks to rebuild the side after a horror run the last three Group 20 seasons.

At times the club has shown glimpses of its signature attacking brilliance with the proud club high on the ladder in the early rounds.

But a lack of depth in crucial positions has often been exposed, as injuries hit hard and the inevitable slide down the standings resulted in its top grade sitting on the sidelines come finals time.

However, Parr has vowed to turn the club around if the players take in his message and move in the same direction, which has often been another of the club's problems.

"A lack of depth has hurt us the last couple of years," he said.

"We have a few injuries and we just run out of troops and it comes back to a few bad decisions by the club, but hopefully we can just work on our basics and go back to scratch."

Parr, who played in the Black and Whites heartbreaking 2009 reserve grade grand final loss, said the days of players doing as they please were over, saying amore autocratic leadership style would result in more wins and less off-field distractions.

"We probably pulled the wrong rein last year, Logan (Wright) was a terrific player but he probably wasn't the best choice for coach, you don't really know this stuff because you're buying these players blind," he said.

"Our club, I think, needed a stronger coach and some stronger personalities, because I think the players have been ruling the roost for a little too long ? for the last four or five years ? and so the team was more player orientated than coaching orientated.

"I'll give them a game plan, a how to and why to about the weekend and they've just got to do it.

"I just need them to follow the plan to the letter and everything will be right.

"Regardless of talent if we're going in the same direction with the same plan then we'll be a competitive unit."

Excitingly for the the club's supporters, Parr is looking to sign several English imports with the club to know within in the next two months if they have secured their services.

"We're looking at a few things (players) at the moment,"?he said.

"We've sent away a few emails and we're not really sure what we might get back at this stage.

"We're going northern hemisphere rather than southern, so we've just got to find out what's going on there and hopefully a few weeks before we start playing we'll be able to get some players over."
