THERE will be a changing of the guard for the Hay Magpies' second season in the top grade in Group 20, with former Yenda Blueheeler Rene Woods taking the position of non-playing coach for 2012.
Woods helped Yenda's reserve grade side to the premiership this year but will accept the new challenge of building up the new boys of the competition.
Woods' nomination for the top job comes as former Welsh international Gareth Price did not seek re-election, but is negotiating terms to stay on as a player.
While the Magpies were, at times, on the end of a steep learning curve in Group 20's first grade competition this year, Woods is excited about the future of the club.
"A lot of the kids who made up the 18s premiership team in 2010, had a taste of senior football last year and are ready to make their mark in 2012," Wood said.
"Blokes like Mitchell Rosser, Corey Harrison, Christopher Payne, Lloyd Schulz, Luke Deacon, John Payne and Ryan Gash will feature in my plans for the season, and I hope I can entice a bloke like Tennyson Vance back for another season."
While Woods was in blue and white this year, he is no stranger to the Magpies having won a reserve grade title with the club in 2009 before coaching its under 18s team in 2010 to a premiership.
Woods said he hoped to retain all of the club's playing stocks so they may push for a finals place next years.
"The club has good performers right through the ranks and we just need to step up a gear to be competitive," he said.
"Players like Craig Millan, John Weymouth showed what they are capable of, and with proven performers like Shayne (Kennedy) and Jermaine (Dixon) in the lineup, we have potential match winners.
"With Moe Clune, and hopefully Gareth (Price) giving us a strong platform up front, and backrowers Seva Esira and Ratu Yaka the forwards look in pretty good shape.
"I hope to get good value out of Harley (Hey) and Conrad (McGinty) in the season, both have great potential and I hope to be able to build on that potential"
The club is also keen to resign Kiwi centre Jaxon Samoa who added class to the team's backline in the latter stages of 2011. Samoa has expressed his desire to return in 2012.
Jaxon returned to New Zealand early in November and represented the NIUE Islands team in the Pacific Cup Rugby Union tournament.
