Harrigan to referee Pie in the Sky clash

11 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
WITH the level of star power set to take the field in Hay next year for their Pie in the Sky clash, it's only fitting the referee in control of the game is nicknamed Hollywood.

Highly respected former whistle blower Bill Harrigan is the latest big name to sign up for the pre-season blockbuster that is set to attract some of the biggest names of the code in the last 20 years.

Harrigan arguably boasts the most impressive resume in the game's history having controlled 392 first grade games, 21 State of Origins, 25 Tests and 10 grand finals.

Mastermind of the pre-season blockbuster Ken Beissel said he did not have to beg Harrigan to be a part of the weekend, instead he just picked up the phone.

"When I rang Bill he said he'd be only too happy to help bush football, because he realises that there's a problem and this is one was way in which he could help," Beissell said.

"He is and has been the most famous ref in the game, and the stupid thing is that I only had to ask him once.

"When I called to see if he would do it he had me on loud speaker and after I told him what the side was a couple of guys in the car couldn't believe what the side was."

With the All-Stars side to be coached by Arthur Beetson and skippered by Mal Meninga, some people in Group 20 have questioned whether the famous names will make the trek to Hay next March.

However, Beissel told The Area News yesterday that he would not put his reputation on the line if he did not think he could deliver the cavalcade of stars to the Riverina's doorstep.

"No way in the world," he said when asked if there is a chance players could pull out.

"I'm a country boy and I'm from the Riverina and I pride myself in what I do and nearly everyone of these guys (in the All-Stars side) have already played out there.

"I have got a connection with blokes like Laurie Daley in that I played in Junee and I worked for his father and Laurie was our ball boy early on.

"I don't really care what people think, I'll just go about and do it and we will do it, and that's all there is to it."

The squad, which was finalised last week is still yet to be made public, but Beissel said it should be revealed later this week.

Players are jumping out of their skins to be involved in this match. It will be the biggest Rugby League event in Southern NSW - if not the CRL - in 2011, bar none...
