Group 20 stars shine in CRL's massive win

30 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
THE Country Rugby League Seconds side thrashed Queensland Country by 56 points in Roma on the back of a second-half shock-and-awe attack.

With only a few days in camp before the game, the CRL side struggled through the opening quarter with Queensland starving the visitors of the ball with the away side notching up five drop outs.

Flying in the face of a 9-2 penalty count in Queensland's favour, CRL coach David Elvy said he knew his side had the attacking weapons to covert when they had the opportunities.

"It was one of those halves where everything we tried came off, the passes stuck and the plays you practice at training all worked perfectly, it's not often you get 20 minutes like that let alone a full half," Elvy said.

"We made a few mistakes and didn't find touch with a penalty (in the first-half) so we had to get through a fair bit of defence on our line and I think in the long run that's actually what got us over the line.

"When we went into half-time up by 10 points after we knew we had hardly any ball, it was actually a positive.

"We came out in the second-half and controlled field position, the ruck and got through our sets and I can't remember too many mistakes, and the points came as a result."

Elvy raved about the five Group 20 players in the side, saying they stepped up to the mark required, adding they did their chances of re-selection in the squad next year no harm.

"His involvement from the back was really good and his energy was really high all game and the fact he kicked nine from nine helped the score tick over," Elvy said of Waratahs' star Ben Jeffery.

Willy Jones played but left the field with 10 minutes left in the game when the result was in the bag, citing the lower leg strain he carried into the game.

The hard-running centre has not been named in the starting line-up for the Mallee Men this weekend against Yenda.

"I've watched Steve (Richards) a couple of time for Group 20 and he did exactly the same thing for Country, he took it forward and gave us plenty of metres," Elvy said.

Leeton's Luke Thompson was also damaging in attack for the entire second-half, where his services were required after CRL lost Parkes' Pat Rosser to injury along with Tim Mallise, who was knocked out in the early minutes.
