WARATAH Tigers coach Kodie Charles didn't hold back in his scathing criticism of his side's effort against the Leeton Greens yesterday, saying the competition leaders couldn't have played worse if they'd tried.
Charles' comments come after the Tigers' embarrassing 40-6 loss to Leeton and said the only positive to come from the match was the boot print firmly imprinted on the Tigers' behinds.
"Everything we trained for and everything we were meant to do we did the opposite," Charles said. "We knew what the opposition was going to come out with but everything went in one ear and out the other with the boys, they didn't pay attention to a single thing that was said at training."
While the Tigers were missing star players Dwayne Simpson, Ben Jeffery and Graham Levu, Charles said their absence was no excuse for the poor performance put in by the other team members.
"They are really good players but the way the rest of the team played they wouldn't have helped," he said. "There was absolutely no structure, there were guys wanting to do one thing and others wanting to do another, there was no unity, we couldn't hold on to the ball and our one-on-one tackles just weren't sticking."
Coming out strong from the start, Leeton coach Brad Purtell said he knew his side needed to shut the Tigers down early and for good if they were going to prevent a repeat performance of their round-six loss to the competition leaders.
"We knew it was going to be tough but the boys rose to the task," Purtell said. "We started off well and we had to shut down a few key players. We stuck in there and we had a game plan to control the ball and complete our first five sets and we turned it on from there."
Going into the break up 30-0, Purtell said it was vital his team stayed switched on as he knew how quickly the Tigers could get the ball over the line if they had even a small opportunity.
"Last time they scored three tries in a few minutes and we couldn't let that happen again, we couldn't even let them get a sniff at it," Purtell said. "But our defence won us the game, they had a few sets on our line which could have been tries but the defence kept them out."
Purtell admitted the score could have been a lot closer if the Tigers didn't drop so much ball but said Leeton proved the better team on the day and it was the whole team effort that gave them such a convincing win.
Outstanding players for Leeton were Brent Pike, who scored two tries, Hayden Crockett, Noa Fotu, also with two, and Nick Puntoriero while Clinton Green converted six out of the seven tries.
While Charles was filthy with most of his team, he said Josh Charles, Kelvin Simpson and the Tigers' only try-scorer Enoch Tia never stopped trying despite the disappointing performance of the rest of their teammates.
