DESPITE some early mistakes, the Yenda Blueheelers have secured a dominant 26-14 win over the Griffith Black and Whites at EW Moore Oval yesterday to move into fifth spot on the Group 20 ladder.
Both sides took a while to feel their way into the game, with mistakes late in the tackle count inhibiting the amount of attacking raids they were able to make.
But once Yenda cut out the rubbish and completed its sets the tries were soon coming, with Seru Rogo scoring himself a well-earned hat trick.
Yenda co-coach Chris Richards said he was happy with the finishing of his side, after they cut out mistakes and said the second half of the season looks bright after a slow start to the year.
“At the start we made a few silly mistakes, a few dropped balls and a few forward passes, but after that we knuckled down, completed our sets and the tries came,” Richards said.
The Yenda coach had high praise for his brother Trevor, Kit Bakmoala and Rogu and said they were integral parts to the sides win, with Trevor and Bakmoala in particular eating up the meters with ball in hand.
“Trevor got through a mountain of work and Kit off the bench, he may not have made the amount of hit ups, but every time he did he nearly made a break,” he said.
“And Seru, he’s got a lot of talent, you don’t get many bad days with him.
“We have just got to keep building, get in the top three come finals time and from there anything can happen.”
However, the news is not as rosy for Black and Whites coach Paul Lawrence who admits that finals football may be out of reach for the club for 2008.
“Maybe we just need to worry about next week, it would be a bonus if we got there (finals), but at the moment I think we would need to rely on too many other results,” Lawrence said.
Lawrence also rued the mistake rate early, however unlike Yenda, the Black and Whites weren’t able to cut it out of their game.
The Griffith coach was also left frustrated on how near his side keeps coming to winning but fails to close out a game. He says despite errors the club is tantalisingly close to another win.
“I was pretty happy with the effort, it’s just a case of coming up short in a few areas,” he said.
“We’re playing bad footy but when you look at the scoreboard we’re only down by 12 with 10 to go.”
The Black and Whites got on the board early through Moape Railo, but Yenda hit back with a converted try to Rogu to lead 6-4.
Mistakes late in the tackle count held both sides back for the next few sets before a damaging
wide run by Dwayne Simpson saw him crash over to make the score 8-6.
A mid field bomb by Trevor Richards led to the Blueheelers next try to Bakmoala before Rogu got his second for Yenda to lead 16-8 at the break.
From there is was all Blueheelers with only a wild final 10 minutes allowing Griffith to score what proved to be just a consolation try.
