Sink the Mariners

01 Sep, 2010 12:00 AM
IT'S the kind of opportunity that doesn't come along too often - and Dem Torino is grabbing it with both hands.

The Yoogali Soccer Club midfielder will be joined by Griffith City's Daniel Andreazza tonight when they tackle the Central Coast Mariners at Valentine Park in Sydney.

Torino, who is no stranger to representative sides, said he is excited about the opportunity tonight's game represents, saying he hoped to impress the Mariners' selectors that will be on hand.

"It should be good for the Riverina and country boys to take on some of the big names," Torino said.

"It's all a bit of a rush the last few weeks leading up to the game."

While YSC's Scott Graham is set to be ruled out of the game due to sickness, Torino said it was a difficult decision to miss his side's first training ahead of their major semi-final against Yoogali FC.

"It was a bit of a hard decision to make, with training locally, but you have to give it your all because you never know," he said.

The inaugural under 23s side will have their work cut out for them with the Mariners' youth side winning back-to-back titles in the last two seasons, with Brady Smith, Adam Ormsby and Nick Fitzgerald likely to cause Riverina some headaches.

But co-coach Royston Thomas backed his side to impress the A-League officials that will be on hand to survey the talent from the region.

"The sacrifices they have given up, it;'s a long way to Sydney, and people are giving up work and school and study and myself and Andrew Douglas the other coach, we've said to each other that we'll have little trouble in motivating them.

"It's important to try and get these guys spotted by the club so they can maybe get the chance to play professional football and if this is the start of a process of more games, and more opportunities then that would be great.

"It'll be about the performance of the team, to make sure we don't get embarrassed which I don't think we will, but there' will be an individual emphasis from the players as well for them to impress, and we're all competitive so we'll be going out to win the game.

Thomas also hinted that if the Riverina and the Mariners find the partnership to be mutually beneficial then the A-League club could bring side's to the region in March next year as part of their pre-season preparations.
