Real Juice refuses to be squeezed out

22 Feb, 2012 06:00 AM
REAL Juice has won a berth in the Griffith Touch Football men’s division 1/2 grand final, after surviving a heart-stopping drop-off against CCY Sumans at Ted Scobie Oval on Monday night.

In one of the most exciting finishes seen in the competition for years, both sides were reduced to just three players for close to 10 minutes as they looked to seal the drop-off victory.

The fact the game went to extra time was a minor miracle in itself, with Sumans seemingly having done enough to win through to the grand final when they scored less than a minute before full-time.

But with the final siren sounding, Real Juice launched one last attacking raid with Jason Bertacco crossing from close-range to lock the game up at four-all.

From there the growing crowd gasped at every diving tag made, as one by one, the players dropped away as the tension and desperation grew with every passing unsuccessful set.

Finally the dam burst and Ross Marando made the most of a gap to score the winning try for Real Juice.

Both sides fought hard in the opening minutes to gain an upper hand, with their execution in the red zone the only thing standing in their way between an early touchdown.

Real Juice opened the scoring when Bertacco set up Marando for his first for the afternoon, with the lead doubling soon after with Dean Dinicola crossing.

Sumans hit back when Greg Bonetti scored with the decision heavily disputed by Real Juice with Marando making the score 3-1 in favour of Real Juice.

In the shadows of half-time Sumans’ Peter Baratto kept his side in touch as the slid over from in close as his side trailed 3-2.

Real Juice continued to rack up the penalties in the second half allowing Sumans to draw level at 3-3, but they lost a player for the game with Peter Baratto forced from the field with a lower-leg injury.

Both sides had their chances to put the game away before Sumans last-gasp touchdown, which only set up even more exciting drop-off with the roller coaster ending to the game worthy of grand final.

When wouldn't a team like Real Juice not dispute a try being scored? Been happening for year!
