PCYC’s boxing night suffers body blow

29 Jan, 2008 02:07 PM
The change, while an obvious inconvenience, does not mean the card will not go ahead for the competitors.

PCYC manger Kym Bock said two of the biggest changes for the new date is the fact the event will not be held outside and the availability of boxing legend Johnny Lewis is unknown.

Lewis was confirmed to attend the February 23 event, but Bock said PCYC would still try and get him to attend the rearranged card.

Other than adding obvious star power to the event, Bock said Lewis was going to view David Rauluni Jr’s fight with great interest.

“Johnny Lewis was supposed to come but we don’t know if he will be able to,” Bock said.

“I know that in April the Australian team will have the Oceania titles and he may be involved with that, we just don’t know at this stage.

“It (Lewis maybe not coming) has certainly taken away from the hype.”

Bock said Lewis was considering training Rauluni Jr if he believed he had potential.

But it is not known if Rauluni Jr will be able to fight in an exhibition match on the PCYC card, with his first professional fight due in March.

Even if his professional fight is in early March, the turn around may be seen to be too quick by his trainers, with a golden opportunity missed to impress the boxing guru in Rauluni Jr’s backyard.

A new venue will have to be found with Bock that the conditions in April are not conducive for fighting outdoors.

Also taken away from a February 23 date is the fact that local trainers won’t be able to complete their level one Amateur Boxing Association accreditation in the city, and a clash with a Western Zone PCYC will mean Griffith will not be able to host fighters from Dubbo, Parkes and the traditionally strong Orange area.

But on a positive note, Bock said if PCYC and Griffith City Boxing hosts all scheduled events this year, local fighters will have five local fights to hone their skills.
