No holiday for joggers

30 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
DESPITE the multiple temptations of the Christmas season there was still a keen turnout of seventy runners for the first of the Griffith Joggers holiday series of runs on Scenic Hill on Christmas Eve.

For this series, runners are sent off in two-minute groupings with the aim to be as sociable as possible, the course varies according to the whims of the weather and there are no course markings, so runners need a good mental picture of the map before they take off.

This week, the 10-minute group earned the "most sociable" award, but not without tribulations along the way as the group followed the wrong leader up the path less travelled, struggled to find their way back and were well down the placings. John Johns, Keith McDonald and Ed Frkovic seemed to find a shorter way home, while the rest of the group - Di Keenan, Fiona Fattore, John Dodd, Mark Hancock and Glenys Curphey - persevered a bit longer and declared they would never again follow Frkovic, but that line has been heard before, and forgotten. For his part, Frkovic admits he is not the best navigator on the hill but he still likes to lead, so woe betide others who follow.

The eight-minute group were a write-off with two of the three having trouble finding the big bright blue mats at the start-finish line, while the twelve- and fourteen-minute group made a fair effort, but were respectively unable to control the youthful exuberance of Teresa Burgess and Isaac Brooker. Start groups will shuffle next week with a promotion and relegation system for the unsociable.

The entrants in the short course were everywhere, both in places and times, ranging from Ryan Sweeney who completed the 3.9km in a very smart 15:31, to the tailenders and struggled to get back within the hour.

The short course runners had it hard this week with the usual three kilometres pushed out to nearly four, but still Kyle Bennett (pictured right) managed fourth despite a face plant. Nick Altin helped him limp to the line and still got second, and Neil Palframan walked most of the trip to get third.

The joggers run each Saturday at 5:30pm from the water tower opposite Pioneer Park, with your choice of long or short courses over the tracks and fire trails of Scenic Hill.

NO REST: Ignoring the temptations of Christmas Eve, Kyle Bennett still took to the hill for the Feral Joggers holiday series and managed to come in fourth in the three kilometre race despite tripping on the course.
