Local boys finish fifth at state titles

30 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
GRIFFITH'S Angus Scott, Tumokia Panapa-Poka and Carl Brown have helped Riverina to fifth at the PSSA state touch football cup in Gosford last week.

From the outset the pace of the games set the tone for the carnival, with the junior sides' showing the skills and flair more commonly associated with senior tournaments.

The trio's endurance was also tested during the two days, with 20 minute halves and no time outs, forcing them to dig deep on their own line several times during the 12-game program.

The Griffith contingent helped the side to be one of the most potent in attack with 28 tries being scored, with their defence also solid with only 11 touchdowns scored against them.

After some solid results on the opening day, the second day's games saw the local trio shine, and on the back of their impressive games, their side beat eventual winner North Sydney 1-0.

Angus, Tumokia and Carl proved their spot in the side was valid by being major contributors for their team and will be sure to bring some of the knowledge learnt back to the local competition this summer.

The side's fifth place meant they missed out on a place in the finals by one point, but given the carnival boasted the 15 best sides in the state, Riverina along with the Griffith representatives can hold their heads high.
