DeMarco just pips Ippoliti

08 Mar, 2010 10:32 AM
CLOSE contests were a feature of last week's Griffith Leagues Club B grade squash competition, with Ducati narrowly defeating Husqvarna 20-19.

Three of the six rubbers were decided in five games with Carol DeMarco returning to form to win a marathon match against Anthony Ippoliti.

DeMarco cruised through the first game 9-2 but Ippoliti made her work harder to take the second 9-7, before he put in a determined effort to keep himself in the match by taking the third 10-8.

He was then able to level the score with a 9-7 win the fourth setting the scene for an exciting finish, but DeMarco was able to dictate play and notched up a well-deserved 9-3 win.

Don Centofanti and Joyce Dickie produced a similar result with Centofanti securing another rubber for Ducati in the fifth game, as did Livio Mazzon against Mirco Gatti.

Another close result saw Lambretta victorious against Polaris 20-19.

The match between Julie Henderson and Max Oliver went down to the wire with Henderson winning the first two games before Oliver snatched the match with a 10-8 win in the fifth, while Peter Centofanti and Carissa Benton provided another marathon with Benton narrowly winning the contest for Polaris.

Glen Dunn continued to stamp his authority on line 5 again winning his game in three.

The anomaly of the night was Harley's whitewash win over the luckless Vectrix, and while the victors won six rubbers, Vectrix still managed a credible 15 points.

After earning the title of giant killer last competition, Jason Allen continued where he left off and won a battle royale against B grade club champion Joel Spencer in what proved to be the match of the night with Allen finishing the match with 39 points to Spencer's 38.

After losing the first game 9-0 Norma Spencer bounced back to take the next two games 9-5, 10-8 against Scott McKinnon.

Still euphoric from either his double win the previous week or maybe the excitement of a new tatoo, McKinnon cruised to a 9-1 win in the fourth to level the ledger, but Spencer dug deep and narrowly won 9-7 in the fifth.

Tomorrow night the No. 5 players begin at 6.30pm while Ducati are on Snack Attack.
