G&C Concreting has leap-frogged Colla Bros into second place in division three of Griffith men's touch football after a comfortable 8-3 win at Ted Scobie Oval on Monday night.
The final margin is no indication of the closeness of the contest, as Colla Bros looked threatening in several attacking raids, but fell short in not being able to capitalise on their chances.
Both side's passing was loose in the early minutes as several hit the ground rather than a teammate's hands. Neither side looked likely to break through, before Concreting's Mitch Howard intercepted a pass and raced the length of the field.
Colla got on the board when David Ramponi sent Wayne Tyndall across with some slick hands to tie the score at 1-1.
Brady Corbett gave Concreting the lead when he set-up Luke Devalentin for his first touchdown of the afternoon as the game opened up.
Jason Heffer doubled Concreting's lead soon after, but Colla showed their determination to not let their opponents get too far ahead with Ramponi sneaking over for 3-2.
But two tries to Devalentin and Heffer gave Concreting the handy buffer of 5-2 in the shadows of half-time, with another try on the siren making it very hard for Colla to get back into the game.
With a four-touchdown lead in hand, Concreting threw caution to the wind early in the second half as they attempted several risky passes, with Colla making them pay with the first score of the second stanza.
But the margin was soon back out to four, when Devalentin caught the Colla defence napping, taking a penalty quickly to score easily.
Concreting could have all but wrapped up the game, when a perfect pass was put on the chest of Howard metres from the line, but he fumbled the ball, which elicited cries of "carton" from teammates.
Colla began to get frustrated with their lack of opportunities to get back into the game, and as time ran out, so did Concreting's chances of winning.
