VINTAGE motorbike star David Lee is planning another assault on the American racing scene, after his brief but very successful campaign last year.
It was Lee’s lifelong dream to race against the best the United States has to offer, and not only did he get the chance to go wheel to wheel with the Americans, but he showed them a thing or two.
Lee said he is planning to travel and compete for nearly three months during the southern hemisphere’s winter, with several opportunities to ride for well-respected teams.
“I have some great offers on the table, two real life flat-trackers to ride, the bike I used in 2011 was a converted motocross bike so it was not quite fast enough,” Lee said.
“Tom Laird from Nevada has offered one of his Triumph 750s to ride alongside his main rider Willard Kelley who’s a national pro rider.
“Jerry Cheney from Cheney Racing Frames is going to prepare a modern 450 class weapon to ride in the Amateur Grand Nationals in DuQuion where I will concentrate on the over 50 class.”
Lee’s latest trip will see him tackle new machines, something that he is looking forward to greatly.
“This will be a challenge for me as I have only ridden the pre-1975 class bikes in recent years ... had a good conversation with Jerry and he feels as if I am capable of making the switch,” Lee said.
“He currently rides the old bikes as well as the new ones and the setup as far as the handling is apparently very similar. He reckons the only thing different is the speed difference on the big tracks.
“Bill Davis who helped me no end in 2011 has lent me his Dodge again and his workshop in Texas.”
