Prized gelding’s return to form promises to surprise

With form behind international superstar sprinter Silent Witness, Multidandy will have his first run in almost three years in Sunday's feature sprint at Albury.

Schmetzer yesterday said she could not believe her luck when her loyal owners Rob and Sheree Gavin from Condobolin purchased the Hong Kong star and delivered Multidandy to her stable.

By Danehill out of Kings Island mare New Acquaintance, with almost $900,000 in prizemoney to her name, Multidandy has been allocated the top weight of 64.5 kilograms in Sunday’s sprint.

Schmetzer said she will aim the nine-year-old towards the Wagga Town Plate before taking on Sydney and Brisbane's winter carnival.

“It’s unbelievable really,” Schmetzer said.

“He’s just the best horse I’ve ever had anything to do with.

“I’m hoping to go for the Wagga Town Plate with him, then I’ll probably go to Sydney and Brisbane with him hopefully.

“It’ll be a working holiday.”

The nine-year-old had been retired in Hong Kong since his last run back on May 1, 2005 at Sha Tin.

But after five months with Schmetzer in Griffith, she is confident Multidandy can live up to expectations.

“He’s working very good and has been showing a lot,” Schmetzer said.

“Even though he’s old, he just doesn’t show it. I think he’ll go well, I’m hoping for him to win but it is his first start in a long time so I can't expect too much.”

Schmetzer is considering using an apprentice jockey to ease the big weight but said she will most likely give the ride to her brother Mark.

“I’ll probably go with Mark, he’ll be able to nurse him with the weight,” Schmetzer said.

“The weight shouldn’t worry him too much, he’s a big old strong horse and I don't think it will be a problem.”

Multidandy has had 23 career starts for five wins and six placings, and three starts back ran 3rd behind Silent Witness.

The Danehill gelding finished behind Silent Witness in five of his last six starts and at one stage won four in a row at Sha Tin.

GRIFFITH trainer Tammy Schmetzer has high hopes for the newest addition to her stable, Multidandy, with the two to attack the Sky Channel Gold Open Handicap at Albury on the weekend.
