GRIFFITH trainer Tammy Schmetzer has picked up a stack of major awards including trainer of the year, after a sensational few months.
Schmetzer won the Charley Brothers point-score title for trainer of the year in the Western and Central district, and also amazingly had the top three place getters in the the horse of the year race with Castanza Boy, Little Clap and Jamaika Dame filling the podium places.
Schmetzer said she was hoping to be acknowledged in some way for her success during the eight-meeting Central West picnic circuit, but said she didn’t expect to come away with as many awards as she did.
“We were hopeful for some kind of awards, but I didn’t think we would get the top three (horses of the year),” Schmetzer said.
“It’s a pretty exciting time really and the awards basically mean more opportunities.”
The Griffith trainer clinched the trainer of the year title when Beltana, ridden by Ashley Bord, won the Cowra Pinic Cup recently.
Despite receiving all of the acclades, Schmetzer said she couldn’t do it without all of her support crew, that helps her look after her 22-head stable.
“It really is a stable effort, there is no way I could do it all without my dad, and everybody else that works around here,” she said.
Schmetzer’s stable is set to grow again in the near future, with three more horses from Hong Kong set to reach Australia this week.
However, the Griffith trainer turns her focus to Canberra this Friday, where she is hoping to have five runners.
Her biggest hope is Heresy, running in the $14,000 Patinack Farm Open Handicap over 1206 metres.
