Incoll the new good guy of Griffith racing

20 Jan, 2010 10:54 AM
NEW Griffith Jockey Club (GJC) president Tony Incoll said he was very impressed with the work already done by the existing committee, and was very confident of hosting a successful meeting at Dalton Park this year - the first at the venue in five years.

Incoll, who was elected to the position last week for outgoing GJC head Darrell Worley who left the position due to work commitments, said he was looking forward to rolling up his sleeves in the coming months to make sure the first meet back in Griffith is as successful as it can be.

"I can see (the committee) all doing it for the benefit of the community not to line any pockets. We're doing it for all of Griffith and we've got a great venue out there doing nothing for the last few years," Incoll said.

"They were all pretty keen and got involved, it's going to be tough and it's not going to be easy but I said to them after hearing them speak for a while that I was pretty confident that when I ask for something to be done it will get done, and I'm a pretty hands on kind of person so I'm happy to get out there and do everything with them."

Incoll said he attended the Griffith Cup in Narrandera last year and said in order to make the event not just aimed at punters, the GJC had to think outside the box to ensure it became not just a sporting event but a social occasion as well.

"It's going to be all about the marketing of (the Griffith Cup) this year, it's not going to be the Melbourne Cup in Griffith or anything like that for the first year, maybe we need a three year plan and work towards building it up," he said.

"I went out there (Dalton Park) the other day and I'm confident we'll get a race day and I'm confident the city will get behind the event because we'll make it a bit of a family day to get a few people out to compliment the racing."
