In-form Diehm wins individual event

27 Feb, 2008 09:16 AM
Dennis Diehm (B&D Burglars) is hitting form at the business end of the season and recorded a 25-point round to win the individual event.

Diehm has been unstoppable in the last week also winning an 18-hole event, but it was his Sevens round that garnered the most attention.

A birdie on the difficult par three 11th was a great start to his round and earned him four points and he did well on the most difficult hole on the course, the par four 12th to finish with a par and three points to consolidate the birdie on the previous hole. Diehm then set about making birdie on the tricky par four 14th for another four pointer, before slipping momentarily on the short 16th for a bogey and one point.

He wasn’t about to let the round unravel though, with his third birdie of the nine coming at the par five 17th for yet another four points and the victory.

Peter Keenan (PCYC) finished Round 14 as the runner-up, with a score of 24 points. Keenan outlasted Glen Collis (Firey Reds) on a count back over the final three holes after both players could not be separated over even the final six holes.

Keenan, playing off a steady 18 handicap played a superb knock for the struggling PCYC team, with a birdie two on the long par three fourth hole for four points. Keenan was able to par the final three holes for three points each to survive the count back from Collis.

Other high scores were from Glen Collis (Firey Reds) 24, Mitchell Knox (Ma’s Hell Team) and Ma Taurau (Golfers Delite) 23 points.

There were 111 players with scores of 18 points or better and each had their handicaps reduced by ten per cent for Round 15.

B&D Burglars produced a stunning effort to defeat division one frontrunners and defending champions Woftam Warriors 80-73.

The Burglars will see the win as providing a psychological dent in the armour of the confident Warriors running into the finals, which may prove the difference in the weeks to come. That said, the Warriors still have the points on the board to be the favourites for the title.

Dennis Diehm was the top scorer for B&D with Gerry Cox producing 19, Nathan Campbell and Ian Brereton, 18.

Hopeful’s are now only behind the Warriors on for and against differential after defeating T.D Tiling/Coro Club 76-54, Wade Woods top scoring with 20 points for Hopeful’s.

Hooters have defeated Par-Tee Boys 67-34 to claim fourth spot on the ladder. Portlink Roughies defeated All Barrels Blazing 66-63, which has kept All Barrels Blazing in ninth spot, just outside of finals qualification.

CFCU Savers are proving very hard to beat as they work their way into the finals series, with a 79-70 win over Bendigo Bank.

The Golf Punks are struggling to stay afloat in eighth spot going down to lowly ranked, but highly respected, Blondy’s Hair Salon, 73-65.

L&J CASAGRANDE Builders continue leading division two, notching up another victory, 72-70 over SPS Cavaso Italia.

Sue Franchi cooked up a 20 point round to lead L&J Casagrande to victory, with Brian Grandi (19), Steve Franchi (17) and Alf Franchi (16) also contributing.

Griffith City Motors have moved into second spot in a log-jammed top six after defeating Yoogali Club 65-0.

The Whackers have seen plenty of movement up and down the ladder this season but with two rounds left to play they find themselves in third spot after defeating CR Burley Bricklaying 67-61.

Mode Kitchens are sitting fourth and really turned up the heat in a grudge match against Yoogali Concrete, winning the high scoring match 80-75.

Anthony Ippoliti top scored for Mode with 22 points, a superb effort as captain and was supported by Michael Agnew (20), Elio Colombo (19) and Mark Gatto (19). CFCU Lenders are sixth and survived a scare against Wallace Electrical One 69-68. John Peters and Enzo Basei top scored for CFCU Lenders on 19 points.

The loss puts Wallace Electrical One precariously positioned in eighth spot after leading the division earlier in the season.

One team that still has a chance to break into the top eight is Brady’s Painters, which lost in Round 13 by a single point to Ball Breakers 57-56.

Just two extra points from Brady’s Painters players would have put them just a half-point from finals qualification.

GRIP It ‘N’ Rip It is now the team to beat in division three after demolishing Three Ways AMS 78-0.

Russell Raymond and Trevor Schmetzer top scored for Grip It with 21 points, while Chris Richards finds himself down to a four handicap after starting the summer on eleven.

Area Hotel move into seventh with the win but are no means safe, with two rounds remaining.

Happy Days defeated Wallace Electrical Two 69-52, an important victory for Happy Days, which puts them two competition points clear of Magnificent Seven who are running eighth.

Paddy’s Bunch 49, have defeated the Ball Busters 24 and, with both teams now on twelve competition points, they need two wins and other results to go their way to make the finals.

HANWOOD have a stranglehold on division four, with a four point gap over second placed team and fierce rival Mia Casa after a 78-31 win over MIA Shade Sails.

John Minato top scored for Hanwood, with 21 points in their win over the bottom-ranked side.

For Mia Casa, Paul Ellis and Marcel Guidolin top scored with 19 points, with Guidolin’s score a reflection of the steady improvement in his game over the summer.

Mia Casa ran out 70-0 winners over The Cheeky Chalkies, while The Nice Guys had trouble, with Golfers Delite despite sitting on opposite ends of the ladder and the match ended in a 66-all draw.

In a season without too many high scoring games, Ma Taurau’s 23 points for Golfers Delite in Round 14 is a standout effort.

Farronato Autobody Repairs have taken the foot off the gas over the last couple of weeks and need a quick turnaround to avoid dropping out of the top four, with Farronato’s beaten by two points 70-68 by Linx Finance. Ma’s Hell Team have again produced a big score to easily defeat Team Hairy Tongue 72-43.

Buckley’s and None have kept their finals chances alive, with a resounding victory over The Disciples 74-42.

Buckley’s face Team Hairy Tongue and Murrumbidgee Irrigation over the last two rounds and will need to win both games as bonus points are unlikely to figure into the equation.

Murrumbidgee Irrigation was impressive against Flying Pigs 69-14 and hold onto their finals spot to be sitting sixth.

7 PUNTERS have knocked Belford Petroleum off the top of the ladder in division five with a 71-66 victory over the former leaders.

John Ward came to the fore for 7 Punters with 20 points, and was assisted by Rosalyn Ward (19), Monica Lenon (17), and Rob Colpo (15) in the five-point win.

Awesome Water is sitting third after they were upset by Tyvens 71-66, with Tyvens now safely into the finals on 19 points and seventh position.

One team that is still not safe however is New Holland, after they were upset by Seven Skins in Round 14 70-59, but they are still hanging on to eighth spot by just one solitary point.

The team looking to take their eighth position is Westpac after they defeated Thursday Young Chicks 71-61 to give themselves a chance with two rounds left to play.

The Infamous Golf Cartel easily accounted for The Big Gun’s 66-12, while Outsiders defeated Laughing Coconuts 60-0.
