Griffith course begins to bare its teeth in rough

16 Jun, 2010 11:29 AM
FOLLOWING the recent rain, the Griffith golf course is the greenest it has been for a number of years, with all the extra grass growth in the rough punishing errant shots.

The event on Saturday was a single stableford with 89 players and the CCR is no longer relevent and will remain at 70 until such time as the course is re-rated.

Travis Payne was A grade's best after carding 40 points, which included a birdie on the fifth to go out in one over par 37 for 22 points.

The win looked like slipping away, the back nine proving a sterner task but he bounced back from a miss on the 17th to drain a four-point birdie on the 18th to score 18 home.

Former state and Australian representative Eric Couper, still playing off a five handicap was runner-up with 39 points.

He birdied the seventh in scoring 19 out, he added another on the 16th, but three one-pointers saw him just miss out after adding 20 points on the back nine, shooting a two-over par round of 73.

The new handicap system is throwing up some unlikely names in the lower grades, Barrie Brown, in what would be a first for him, won B grade carding 39 points.

He drained a birdie on the second in scoring 19 points out, then carded five back nine pars to score 20 home.

Runner-up Luke DeValentine finished one behind on 38 points, scoring 18 out then added 20 on the back nine, draining a birdie on the 15th.

The new system also threw up a C grade winner who would not have been in this grade since he was a teenager, with Brian Wiltshire taking the win, carding 40 points and hopefully on the way to conquering his demons and push him back towards the top grade.

He started with a bang, scoring 22 points out then carried the same form into the back nine up until the 17th, where he failed to score, scrambled a one-pointer on the 18th to score 18 home and just hang on for the win.

Derek Langford made use of his increased handicap bonus, taking out runner-up with 39 points despite a miss on the eighth in scoring 19 points out. Then just when he looked set for a win he only managed one pointers on the 16th and 17th, but bounced back with a three-pointer on the 18th to card 20 home.

Pro Pins to Martin Sweeney and Allan Foster, Par Three's to Fourth John Badoco, seventh Roy Hosking, 11th Tim Wilson (visitor) 16th Martin Sweeney.

Vouchers went to 36 points on a countback.
