Golfers greet silly season

THE Christmas Eve event at the Griffith Golf Club last Saturday was a single stableford with 85 players looking to give themselves an early present.

Col Cavanagh won the A grade goodies with a card of 38 points.

Though he birdied the 7th, he only scrambled 16 points out, but he hit his straps on the back nine, draining a birdie on the 17th to card 22 points home.

Runner-up Travis Payne carded 37 points.

He also had a dirty day on the front nine scoring 16 points, then found top gear with six straight back-nine pars and canned a birdie on the 18th.

But bogies on the 16th and 17th saw him score one short with 21 points.

Geoff Smith was the B grade winner with a high card of 42 points.

He birdied the 2nd for 21 points out, then carded 21 home with six pars on the day.

Runner-up Darryl Graham was back on 40 points, scoring 19 out and 21 with 10 pars.

Best score of the day went to C grade winner James Killen, with 44 points.

A four-point par on the 4th saw him score 22 points out, then he added four-point pars on the 12th and 13th, to also score 22 on the back nine.

Runner-up Enso Basei missed on the 6th but bounced back with a birdie on the 7th to score 19 points out.

He missed again on the 13th, but scored 20 home to total 39 points.

Pro Pins went to Kristen Bonetti and Greg Bonetti, and par-threes to 4th Martin Sweeney, 7th Enso Basei, 11th Ryan Harrison and 16th Alf Franchi.

Vouchers went to 35 points on a countback.

Membe rs are reminded that annual subscriptions are due and must be paid by January 31.

They may be paid monthly by contact club manager, Wayne Moat.

Sevens players are advised that the competition resumes on Monday, January 9, not January 12 as previously advised.

The board and Back at the 19th wishes all club members and friends a safe, happy and prosperous new year.

The club will be open all weekend with competitions every day.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday will all be single stablefords followed by the usual pro comp on Wednesday.

There was a pro comp single stableford on Boxing Day with 46 players.

Jack Trimboli took out A grade carding 39 points.

He fired 80 off the stick, scoring 20 points out and 19 home, carding nine pars.

Former local Luke Henderson, now a Wagga CC member, also scored 39 points but lost the last six-hole countback after he too scored 20 out and 19 home, with 14 pars.

Best score of the day to B grade winner John Cafe, carding 44 points.

He made a solid start with a 21-point front nine, then shot the lights out on the back nine to score 23 points, draining a birdie on the 17th, shooting four over par 39 in.

Runner-up Anthony Dunne, 36 points, also made a promising start with a 20-point front nine, but the devil took over on the back nine, slipping to 16 points.

He managed to par the final three holes to steady the ship.

Andrew Grace's prayers were answered taking out C grade on 38 points.

He had a dirty day on the outward nine, his only highlight in his 16 points was a four-point par on the 5th.

Then, despite a miss on the 11th, he scored 22 points home, canning a birdie on the 17th to go with a four-point par on the 12th. Runner-up David Kidd, 36 points, looked a chance after a 21-point front nine but it all turned to nought, only able to score 15 on the back nine.

Vouchers went to 33 points.

WHILE the official vets competition is in recess, the Pro Shop ran a pro comp for them last Thursday with 20 players.

Laurie Corner won the single grade event, carding 37 points on a coutback from runner-up Gerry Cox, 37 points.

Vouchers won by Jim Dickie, John Tarr, Lyndsay Martin, Bill Brown, Brian Flakelar, Ray Mead, Bill Tyndall and John Bortolazzo to 31 points on a countback.

Vets are advised that their annual subs are now due with envelopes on the noticeboard shelf.

A reminder also that the official vets competition resumes on Thursday, January 5 with the added bonus of bar vouchers for scores of 36 points or better.

Wednesda y, December 21 saw a pro comp single stableford with 55 players.

Regular visitor Dodd Donaldson was A grade's best, carding 42 points.

The consistent Laurie Corner was runner-up on 40 points.

On the winner's list almost every week, Peter Den Houting won the B grade scoring 40 points, one ahead of Shane Wallace on 39 points.

The C graders struggled, Nathan Vearing taking the win with 37 points.

Derek Langord was second, with 36 points on a countback.

Last Tuesday, December 27 was another pro comp single stableford with 27 players, enough for two grades was held.

Andrew Romagnolo won the 1-18 division, carding 40 points.

He birdied the 1st to go with four pars in scoring 20 out, then parred six holes to also score 20 on the back nine.

Runner-up Tony De Marco had a dirty day to say the least on the front nine, only able to score 14 points then a back-nine blitz saw him card 23 points home, carding five pars to total 37 points.

Phil Hancock, the 19-36 division winner, was on fire on the outward nine.

He did not put a foot wrong, firing three-over par 39 to amass 24 points, but the walk from the front to the back brought him undone, slipping to 16 points home to total 40 points.

He still had plenty up his sleeve with runner-up David Graham five back on 35 points.

He carded 19 points out, but he too slipped up on the back nine only able to score 16 points.

Vouchers went to 33 points.
