Foster claims win in A grade competition

THE event at the Griffith Golf Club last Saturday was a single stableford with 94 players and a CCR of 70, and in a keenly contested A grade competition, Allan Foster and Martin Sweeney both carded 38 points with Foster taking the win on a countback.

Foster fired 81 off the stick, scoring 19 points out, canning a birdie on the second and then also scored 19 points home which was enough for him to take the countback.

Sweeney fired up on the outward nine, draining birdies on the first and eighth to shoot par 36 and 20 points, but he could not buy a putt on the back nine, home in two over par 37 for 18 points.

Dom Piromalli was B grade's best, overcoming a miss on the first hole to still score 18 points out then birdied the 11th for a 20 points back nine.

Runner-up Tony DeMarco did not help his cause with a miss on the sixth in scoring 17 points out, then played with better consistancy to card 20 points home to total 37 points.

All the hot scores were in C grade with Gordon McDonald playing himself into B grade after carding the day's best score of 43 points.

He blitzed the front nine, scoring 23 points with a four pointer on the fourth, then kept it together to score 20 home with four pars. Unlucky runner-up Danny Careri will also be close to B grade with a score of 41 points, scoring 20 points out and 21 home, carding seven pars on the day.

Pro Pins to Robert Colpo and Chris Conlon with par three's to fourth Robert Trembath, seventh Greg Bonetti, 11th Dave Gandy, 16th. John Bortolazzo.

Vouchers to 36 points on a countback.

Last Sunday's event was another single stableford with 47 players and a CCR of 69.

Jason Magoci blitzed the A grade field, firing two under par 69 to card 44 points as he shot the lights out on the front nine, canning birdies on the first, third, fifth and ninth to go out in two under par 34, then came home in par 35 with birdies on the 12th, 15th and 17th, while a shell shocked Darren Forrester was runner-up on 40 points.

Countbacks sorted the places in B grade after Jim Dickie and Justin Menzies both carded 37 points with Dickie taking the win.

Anthony Zamin was the C grade winner with 39 points pushing Barry Northeast into second place on 38 points.

Vouchers went to 35 points on a countback.

The Golf Club members are mourning the loss of one of its prominent members, Warren Salvestro who passed away last week. He served two terms as club president and also was a board member for sometime and he was always available to use his expertise as a carpenter with any club project, also to represent the Club in inter town competitions as well as to drive the bus.

He will be missed and all club members give condolonces to his wife Margaret and their respective families.

Back at the 19th, on behalf of the club board wishes all members a happy family Christmas with the hope of better things to come in the New Year, we continue to pray for rain.

There will be normal competitions over the Christmas and New Year with a single stroke on Boxing Day, a stableford on Sunday and a Pro Competition single stroke on Monday, December 28.

The club will be closed on Christmas Day.

The Summer Sevens Golf will be in recess until Monday, January 11, but players can still play each week and win Pro Shop vouchers.

Members going on holidays are reminded that annual subscriptions, are now due and must be paid by January 31 and payment by instalments can be arranged with Wayne Moat.

The veterans played their final competition of the year last Thursday and a wise decision to an earlier 9am start paid off big time with all players in before the dust storm hit.

There were 38 players in a draw for partners 4BBB aggregate stableford with a single in conjunction with a CCR of 71.

Bill Carter and Allan Foster were the best combination with a card of 72 points followed by Denis Moran and Keith Woodbridge 71 points, John Gale and Silvio Bortolin 69, Brian Sainty and Peter DenHouting 67, Allan King and Tony Colpo 67, Russ Robinson and Graeme Gifford 66 and Skeet Milne and Joe Cudmore 66 points.

Silvio Bortolin won the single carding 39 points, second Graeme Gifford 38 points, third Bill Carter 37 points, fourth John Bortolazzo 36 points on a countback.

Nearest the pins fourth Bill Carter, seventh David Woodside, 11th, Skeet Milne, 16th John Jefferies, drive and chip Denis Moran.

There will be no veterans competition for the next two weeks and they will resume on Thursday, January 7.

All January competitions will be in one grade.

Last Wednesdays Pro Competition was a two person ambrose with 52 players braving the 40 degree heat,

Eric Couper and Graeme Trevett proved the day's best combination carding 60.5 nett, Steve and Chris Richards runners-up 63.5 nett, Jason Hourn and Shayne Vonbun third 63.75 nett.

Vouchers went ot 65.5 nett.
