Career on course

02 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
WHILE he might be playing in Sydney this week, you could forgive Jake Harrison for thinking he was walking the fairways of Augusta.

The talented 12-year-old will look to pit his skills against the best junior players for their age when he plays the Jack Newton Week of Golf tournament on four of the best courses Sydney has to offer.

Despite his young age, Jake has taken to the sport like it was second nature, and thanks to three rounds a week and countless hours practicing on his backyard chipping green, he is feeling excited about his chances this week.

Jake's father Coby said he knew his son was bound to tackle a high standard of golf from an even younger age.

"He's been playing out here for about five years now and he's been working with (Griffith Golf Club professional) Neil (Bye) for about four years," Coby said.

"We first bought him a set of plastic sticks when he was five, and then my sister bought his first set of irons when he was just a year older.

"He was hitting balls all the time in the backyard but then he was hitting them pretty hard and when we started getting a few dints in the back fence, I thought it was time for him to come out to the course properly."

Asked if his son inherited his golfing talent from him, Coby strongly denied that he handed down Jake's genes for reading the greens, but said he gained immense satisfaction from watching his son play.

"He does play other sports, mainly basketball, which is good because it's a team sport and it's obviously different from golf," he said.

"But he just loves playing golf and I love watching him drill it straight down the middle, and it's just great to see him out and active rather than inside on the Xbox or whatever."

Jake has even asked adult members of the Griffith Club for advice on the four courses facing him this week, with Oatlands, Ashlar, Penrith and Parramatta/Ryde Golf Clubs set test the youngster.

But after receiving his first full set of irons for Christmas, Jake has been putting in the hours to understand their yardage along with getting used to playing out of hazards, ahead of his trip to Sydney.

Asked why he liked golf over more traditional sports for his age, Jake simply said it felt right from the time he picked up a club.

"I just liked hitting the ball when I was younger and now I play as much as I can," Jake said. "My friends know I'm playing in Sydney this week and they said 'best of luck'."

Whatever he shoots this weekend, Coby said he hopes his son takes it in stride as his understanding of the game continues to grow with every drive, chip and putt.

"This week is just about learning more about the game and his game, but he normally does better when it comes to tournaments rather than just playing during the week," he said.

"But you know what kids are like they have no fear so he'll just stand up on the first tee and give it everything he's got."
