Scobies breeze to victory

29 Oct, 2008 08:21 AM
A GREATER understanding in attack led to a comfortable 7-3 win to Scobies/Eric Duncan Plumbing over TFP Tigers during round two of men’s division two touch football at Ted Scobie Oval on Monday night.

Scobies simply had too many weapons in attack with no great difference in players across their line-up, despite running fresh legs at regular intervals.

After an initial feeling-out period, a looping basketball pass found Trevor Richards for an early try to the plumbers, who then tried to extend its advantage by hitting the holes near the ruck.

Tigers showed they too had some options in attack, but too often their hands let them down in sight of the try line.

Simon Taprell looked dangerous early on for TFP but it was Scobies who crossed again soon after, with hard passing across the face of the defence finding Brian Bertolin for 2-0.

Tigers threatened the line without crossing it in the first half and Scobies blew a chance to extend its lead going into the break, with back-to-back penalties giving them great field position.

TFP looked to crank up the speed of its play early in the second stanza after a dressing down at the break, but Bertolin again crossed for Scobies to take the lead out to three.

Tigers finally got on the board soon after when Wayne Andreazza athletically dove over in the corner to give his side some hope of a comeback.

But all of the passing skills were on show by Scobies during its next trip down the field, as Michael Sibraa was on the end of a no-look overhead pass for 4-1.

Andreazza kept the Tigers in touch, bursting through untouched to narrow the gap to two, but an easy try to complete Bertillon’s hat-trick again gave Scobies some breathing room.

One more try apiece left the game in the balance at 6-3, but a runaway try to Bertolin completed an outstanding game for him personally and his team.
