HANWOOD Juniors have booked a date with competition heavyweights Yoogali SC in the title decider after defeating Hanwood FC 2-0 in yesterday's under-17s preliminary final.
At a windswept Noe Santolin Oval, Juniors made the most of their opportunities and a dash of luck from the soccer gods to defeat their cross-town rivals in a closely fought match.
Juniors co-coach Steve Fedrigo said his young side had grown "massively" throughout the season and was confident the club could challenge SC for the crown.
"The boys are really in the right frame of mind at the moment," Fedrigo said.
"We're the youngest side in the comp but they've shown great determination and focus and you can see the difference in their play.
"A few of them have backed up on the bench of the senior grades and that's made a difference."
Goals to strikers Luke Fattore and Jacob Vardanega were the difference on the day, but Fedrigo said luck also played some part.
"It was just one of those days where everything fell into place for us but not them," he said.
Hanwood Football Club coach Ryan Spencer said his chargers could still hold their heads high.
"They really fought to the very end and I'm so proud of them," Spencer said.
"It was just one of those games where we didn't get the rub."
Spencer made special mention of midfielder Michael Sergi, who he described as the best on ground.
Starring for Juniors were Michael Anderson, Paul Sartor, Samuel Salvestrin and Jordan Beltrame.
