A LONG and hard-fought season for Grewal Homes paid off on Saturday with a win over the Waratah Tigers at Ted Scobie Oval.
Grewal Homes was well and truly on the offensive during the first half, scoring all of its three goals before half-time.
But though fighting valiantly in the second half, the Waratah Tigers couldn’t break through to get ahead of Grewal Homes.
It continues a four-year tradition in Griffith, with the side making it straight through to the grand final losing the
premiership.
Grewal Homes captain Kym Ramsey said the pieces simply fell into place for his team.
“We ended up playing to our game plan fairly well,” he said.
“We were fairly happy, because a couple of weeks ago we didn’t really turn up to play and the Tigers beat us easily, but it didn’t happen on Saturday.”
Trevor Cowie scored the first goal for Grewal Homes, with Jamie Piva and Tim Diehm scoring the second and third.
Ramsey said after such a successful first half, the team prepared for an offensive from the Waratah Tigers.
“We knew they would come out pretty hard in the second half, but we held them off,” he said.
Piva was awarded Grewal Homes’ player of the match, a strong achievement in the finals for such a young player.
Ramsey said winning the grand final topped off a fairly solid year for Grewal Homes.
“We started fairly well until about the middle of the season until we had a few minor hiccups,” he said.
“Before the finals, I believe we scored 70 goals, and conceded only 10.
“We were pretty happy. We had a pretty good year.”
The fact there have been three different premiership teams in three years shows the robust nature of the Griffith hockey competition.
