Black and Whites 4
West Wyalong 0
GRIFFITH Black and Whites Leaguetag girls have their eyes on some silverware after sweeping aside West Wyalong in Sunday's Group 20 major semi-final.
A half-time blast from coach Graham Webb and senior player Liz Johnstone was the catalyst for a scintillating second half from the side, which will now face minor premiers Leeton in a qualifying final this Sunday. Going into the break deadlocked at 0-0, the Black and Whites were told to "cut the flashy stuff" and go back to basics.
The girls went from stone cold to white hot, running in four second-half tries to crush a shellshocked West Wyalong. Rapidfire tries to Maka Toga, Tynetta French, Shailyn Williams and a brilliant dummy-half solo try to veteran Carolyn Webb sealed the win.
"We did get off to a slow start but we gave them a bit of a revving at half-time and it did the trick," coach Graham Webb said.
"They were trying to be too flashy and weren't running into gaps and doing the basic draw and pass stuff."
Webb said he was confident his side could mix it with raging competition favourites Leeton this weekend.
"They're a good side but we can beat them," he said.
"We're not the fastest team but we have experience and skill and if we play smart we're a real chance."
Players' player for Griffith was Liz Johnstone.
In the other Leaguetag semi, Yenda disposed of Darlington Point 3-2.
Sunday's qualifying final between Griffith and Leeton will kick off at Yenda at 12.40pm.
