Back at the 19th

The event last Saturday at the Griffith Golf Club was a single stableford with 88 players challenging the course with a CCR of 69.

Though there was plenty of run on the course, the lush growth in the rough punished errant shots but it held no terrors for Mark Brown, who fired two over par 73 to take out A grade carding 44 points.

He shot the lights out on the outward nine, canning birdies on the first, fourth, seventh and ninth to go out in two under par 34 for 25 points.

He could not produce the same fireworks on the back nine, only able to par three holes but a four-point birdie on the 18th saved his day, carding 19 points home.

Runner-up Col Leeson picked the wrong day to fire, shoooting 77 off the stick to card 42 points.

He drained birdies on the fifth and seventh on the front nine but a one-pointer on the eighth and a miss on the ninth robbed him of a higher number than 20 points out.

He parred the 10th, birdied the 11th, but a run of bogies from the 12th, to the 15th, saw him slipping from contention.

However, he rallied to par the 16th, and 17th, then drained a birdie on the 18th, to score 22 points home.

Alf Franchi stopped his slide to card the winning B grade score of 39 points.

He scored 20 points out, carding six pars then served up much the same on the run home to card 19 points and was fortunate misses on the fifth and 12th did not cost him a win.

Runner-up Tony DeMarco carded four pars in a 20-point front nine but double bogied the 10th, 11th, and 12th on the back nine to slip out of contention, though he rallied to par the 15th, 17th, and 18th, for 18 points home.

Robin Salvestro made it two Saturday wins on the trot, carding the winning C grade score of 40 points.

He set up his win with a solid 22 point front nine, draining a birdie on the seventh.

He carded another four three-pointers on the back nine to score 18 points home.

He had to survive a countback after Silvio Bortolin also carded 40 points with the same splits, 22 out and 18 home, pushed into runner-up, only scoring 10 points in the final six to Salvestro's 12.

Bortolin birdied the fourth for a whopping five points in his 22-point front nine but a miss on the 13th was the rock he perished on in his 18-point run home.

Mark Brown had a real day out, taking the ProPin on the first and also the par three fourth and 16th.

Garry Blacka won the 15th ProPin, Col Leeson the seventh and Tom Morgan 16th.

Vouchers went to 37 points.
