Yoogali side dedicates win to past supporters

01 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
PROVING the form guide gets thrown out the window in grand finals, the Yoogali Soccer Club over 35s beat the Yenda Tigers in the biggest game of the year, after sneaking home 1-0 at Wade Park.

The narrow win sparked long celebrations from YSC after what was a hard-fought decider, with the players dedicating the win to the past supporters of the club, including recently farewelled David Jones.

Assistant coach Mark Gatto said the emotion-charged lead-in to the game helped the side put into perspective how important a win was for the club.

"We brought in a flag that years ago a couple of the life members of the club that have passed away used to wave, and we said if times got a bit tough in the game, try and put in a bit extra (effort)," Gatto said.

Despite missing the direction of head coach Anthony Ippoliti, YSC hit the ground running and nearly scored in the opening five minutes when Ian Ippoliti hit the upright.

YSC continued to take the fight up to Tigers and were rewarded in the 20th minute when a through ball found Elio Colombo, who was then brought down in the box with John Keenan stepping up to cooly slot home the penalty.

"They played really well in the last 10 minutes of the first half and they came out all guns blazing at the start of the second half," Gatto said of Yenda's fightback.

The casualty ward for both sides began to get crowded with neither side backing off, as the Tigers looked to get one back late into the game.

"I think that (some of the injuries) gave us a bit of composure actually and the game started to come back to us a bit and then it was just a matter of hanging in there, but it was very 50-50 in the last few minutes," Gatto said.

"They (Yenda) played hard, but we'd not beaten them all season and the game was played in good spirits."
