AS THE newest recruit to Coro Club Oval recounts his first game in the Griffith competition, it's easy to see why Andrew Cowper would stand out in a crowd -or a penalty box to be more precise.
"In the first game I played here we had a corner, and I saw the ball coming and I knew I wouldn't have to jump for it and a couple of defenders tried to climb up me to get to the ball," Cowper said.
"Later on some of the guys said it was the funniest thing they'd ever seen."
It's easy to see why defenders will try and use the English import as a step-ladder given he comes in at a height more commonly seen at West End stadium, with the striker measuring 199cm or 6 foot 7 inches in the old scale.
While Wests Coach Bryan Salvestro admits his newest recruit's height is of a benefit at set piece time, he said his side cannot rely too much on Cowper's advantage as his side takes on Leeton United this weekend.
After bowing out in their first State Cup game last weekend, Salvestro said having a near full-strength side should mean his side is able to make a charge off the bottom of the ladder as the competition enters its second round.
"It's always a very physical game against Leeton and I know their player depth is a bit shallower than ours, so if they have got some injury problems then that will cause more drama for them," Salvestro said.
"But we're coming out of injury dramas and we're only about one or two blokes away from being complete again.
"We've been getting one player back and then swapping them because somebody is injured, and it's mainly been in our backline as well and against Hanwood (FC) and YFC our whole backline was out."
While they have had 11 goals scored against them, Salvestro is confident his side can make Leeton work for every opportunity, with Mark Giannini tipped to be called up to first grade, in order to add his no-nonsense brand of football to the midfield.
Leeton is experiencing several injury woes heading into the game, with captain Frank Alampi injuring his knee last weekend in State Cup action, Michael Fondacaro (knee), vice-captain Scott Munro, who made his return from a similar knee complaint as Alampi against Cronulla, Michael Raso, Matt Raso, Adam Raso, Michael DiLorenzo, Jason Bowe and Jarrod Sillis all in doubt.
