Slow start ends in win for City

28 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
DESPITE showing signs of rust Griffith City Football Club women's side proved too good for Yoogali Football Club, beating them 3-0 at Noel Santolin Oval on Sunday.

Still feeling the effects of seven weeks off, City were sluggish out of the box and almost paid for it with YFC nearly sneaking one past their 'keeper early.

But while working the rust out of its gears, Griffith City still showed glimpses of its usual class-winning performance with Katie Trimboli putting the first goal on the board.

Going into the break up 1-0, coach Simon Bonetti said the team needed to step up its intensity and form if it wanted to retain its unbeaten title.

"We've had two games in the past seven weeks, both of those being last weekend," Bonetti said.

"The girls were in good form before the byes and now it's a matter of getting the confidence and energy levels back up.

"They started off sluggish and I wanted them to concentrate on getting their energy levels back up, pick up their intensity and show more form, which they did in the second half."

While City picked up their intensity in the second half, YFC managed to contain them for a time, but couldn't keep up the pressure and City's Michelle Foscarini scored their second goal from outside the box.

However, YFC didn't back down and managed to shut down a lot of their opportunities, but GCFC's Alana Villata snuck a third past the keeper moments before the bell to take the final score to 3-0.

YFC manager Danny Bellato said despite the loss, Sunday's match was one of the best games Yoogali had played.

"I'm very proud of how they played against a top team," Bellato said.

"Previous game have always been eight or nine nil against them. The girls are improving greatly and we've got a lot of juniors, who, if you give them a year or two, could well be the next Griffith City."

Even the opposition admitted they had put forward a tough game, with Bonetti commending YFC 'keeper Rachel Reitano for her performance.

Outstanding players for Griffith City were Kandice Marin and Melinda Foschi, while stand-out players for YFC included Sarah Bellato, Grace Ieracitano and youngster Jinni Sibbick.
