NATIONAL women's football coach Tom Sermanni will again be on the look out for the next big thing in the game when he casts his eye over the talent taking to the pitch for the Griffith nine-a-side tournament this weekend.
Incredibly this will be Sermanni's fifth visit to the city with his presence at the pre-season competition stretching back to the inaugural competition.
In what is a coup for all female players in the region, Sermanni will again look to give a player a potential golden ticket to make their footballing dreams come true.
"That's been the benefit of going there and over the last four or five years we've looked at several players for more work, with people like Rachel Pearson who has actually gone a reasonable way within the team structure and still has potential to kick on and become an elite player," Sermanni said
"So it's definitely invaluable for me to go out there and look at the talent and enjoy the football."
The well-respected coach said he loves what regional female players bring to the national program, saying not only do they match their city counterparts skill wise, but they have intangible benefits that he finds appealing when trying to build a world-class player.
"Low maintenance, good character and hard working, that's country female players," Sermanni said.
"The grass roots part of the game is crucial for men's and women's, particularly so for women's football because so many of the players that come into our system do so from small towns."
The national coach said he will be coming alone to the carnival this weekend, saying his team needs to rest after a hectic three weeks before they head into camp again in a fortnight,
"We've just played North Korea and New Zealand and we're preparing for the Asian Cup in May which is also a World Cup qualifier, so it's a big year coming up," he said.
"Last year was a transition and rebuilding year if you like, but we've hit the ground running from the start of this year and there will be big commitment from the players as we look to qualify for the World Cup."
Seven teams from across New South Wales and interstate will line up in the senior tournament, with Albury back to defend their title against North Sydney and local sides Yenda, Wests, Hanwood FC, Yoogali SC and Leeton.
Juniors are still able to sign on for the junior coaching clinic run by Sermanni on Saturday morning for $15 if they ring Tony Santolin at Griffith Real Estate.
