New era begins

01 Feb, 2012 05:30 AM
GRIFFITH’S four clubs seeking admittance into the inaugural Country Super League (CSL) competition have been accepted this week, paving the way for a new direction in the game’s history.

Hanwood FC, Wests SC, Yoogali SC and Yoogali FC will join six clubs from Goulburn North East FA with Tatura, Cobram, Cobram Victory, Shepparton, Shepparton South and Shepparton United throwing their name in the ring.

The new competition has been 14 months in the making, and while there is light at the end of the tunnel, there is still much work to be done by the organising body before an expected April 14 kick off.

But signs the competition is already up and running were evident this week, when clubs were sent their first bill.

However, matters are complicated with Wagga United’s expression to also join the CSL despite not entering their submission in time for the deadline two weeks ago.

“Wagga United has contacted (Goulburn North East president) Frank Trimboli, and I’m not sure what their situation is, but apparently they were disappointed they were not given more notice,” Griffith vice-president Paul Fisher said.

“They had a lot of notice, but I don’t think it was passed on to a club level.

“I think it was put on the back burner for a lot of the sides down there, and then all of a sudden it has come to fruition and then they have started saying ‘why aren’t we involved?’.

“So to my knowledge Frank has given Wagga United two weeks to consider it.”

If Wagga United was admitted into the first year of the CSL it would create an uneven balance of 11 teams, and The Area News understands the Wagga team will be asked

to watch from the sidelines, for the first season at least.

While Football Victoria has officially sanctioned the competition, Griffith Football president Matthew Curran his yet to hear from Football NSW, but positive news is expected this week.

A CSL board will be established in the next two weeks with Curran set to be a part, but Trimboli is seeking others in the Griffith region to be involved.

Referee numbers and standards for the CSL are also set to be looked at in the lead-up to an expected opening round on April 14.
