Magpies soar closer to finals

THE Wests Soccer Club women's side took a giant leap towards being in contention for finals football, after its 10 goal drubbing of Hay at Coro Club Oval on Sunday.

After having a spate of poor performances, the Magpies returned to form to blow an undermanned Hay side off the park in the opening half, with the three points practically in the home side's possession after they lead 5-1 at the break.

Wests coach Frank Portolesi said his side's dominance allowed it to put into practice a style of play he hoped would push the more-fancied sides in the Griffith and District Competition.

"We made a lot of runs down the wing, but after we had a really bad game last week I was adamant that regardless of the team we were playing, we were going to try and use the flanks a bit more," Portolesi said.

"They probably could've dribbled around that team but I was wanting them to get into the habit of playing it wide and opening them up with a bit of pace

"So they did that a lot better than they have in the last few weeks. They had a lot more possession than the other side, which made it a lot easier for the quick girls to get into the game."

Louisa Raso was dominant with the ball at her feet and scored an impressive personal tally of four goals in the rout, while Brooke Heffer controlled the midfield almost single handedly and set up many of her teammates.

Michelle Catanzariti marshalled the backs early in the game, before being moved up the field and even found space to score a handy goal off a header, with goalkeeper Kelly Bannister even getting a chance to play in the outfield, converting a penalty chance to rub salt in Hay's wounds.

However, the goal of the game came from Sharee Schoonbeck, when she launched a blistering shot from outside the box to put the cherry on top of what was an outstanding performance by the Magpies.
