WESTS Soccer Club has signalled its intent to try and take the Regional Premier League (RPL) by storm with the club announcing they have added three more European-born players to its roster.
The trio continues the strong relationship the Magpies have developed with the United Kingdom, with more than
six players calling Coro Club Oval home on the past three seasons.
The newest recruits bring with them impressive resumes having all played in academies linked with professional clubs, with Lewis Hancock (Scunthorpe), Kyle Greaves (Bolton) and Rhys Jones (Swansea) all settling in well with their new teammates.
Despite having only been in the city a matter of days, Wests coach Ross Morgan said the lure of playing in the RPL did help land the trio’s services.
“It was, but generally it’s just the experience of coming to Australia for a year or two or however long they want to stay, that’s what they were after when they approached us to come out here,” Morgan said.
“They’re all know what they’re doing, so they’ve all come over here for a bit of a holiday and to try and play some good standard of football.
“We all know that it’s going to be a lot tougher than what we faced last season, but we want to be tested and be pushed every week because it means so much more when you achieve success.”
The group take over from three Englishmen who left to return to their homeland last season with defender James Robson, midfielder Ben Phillips and striker Andrew Cowper all making a substantial impact for the Magpies.
In an almost like-for-like swap, Hancock will line up in the backs with Greaves and Jones set to combine in the midfield, but the pair have the ability to push forward into a striking role.
Coming from the northern hemisphere winter, the group already has match fitness under their belts, with Morgan saying they are ready to hit the ground running.
“They’re ready to go, they just need to have a bit of a pre-season behind them, which will be about six weeks,” Morgan said.
“I think they’re going to be able to perform at the level we need them to for us to be successful this season.
“They’re similar in standard to the players we already have at the club, and with their experience they bring here from back home, hopefully they can pass that onto the young guys.”
The group will also be involved with training Wests’ younger sides and academy teams, with Greaves having already linked with the under 14s.
Wests will hit the paddock for their first trial for 2012 as they tackle the highly-fancied Canberra United club, with under 16s to kick-off at noon on Saturday, February 25, with under 18s to follow at 2pm and first grade at 4pm.
All games will be played at Coro Club Oval.
