Hanwood FC 1
Hillston SC 0
YOU could forgive Hanwood Football Club's women's side for celebrating like they had won a grand final, after they won their first game of the season last weekend against Hillston Soccer Club at Coro Club Oval.
After suffering through eight rounds of defeats, including a 1-0 loss to Hillston, Hanwood's sole win sparked celebrations scene that are normally reserved for premiers.
Hanwood FC coach Dwayne Bastianon said the win was just reward for the squad that has continued to improve themselves despite being on the wrong side of the scoreline for the last two months.
"It was a good win by the girls and hopefully they get a bit of confidence out of it as well," Bastianon said.
"It's hard to keep them going through the tough times, but to their credit they've kept putting in at training and on the weekend, but it's a long time in coming.
"But on the weekend I think they were just hungrier than the Hillston girls, they just wanted it more and they wanted to get a bit of revenge on losing to them a couple of weeks ago."
Despite going into the break locked at nil-all, Bastianon said he had confidence in his side to not split the points, saying they just had to retain possession and the shots on goal would come.
At the hour mark Jess Hall answered her coach's prayers when she sparked the goal for Hanwood with her break and chip of the Hillston goalkeeper, leading to a goalmouth scramble, with Nat Mazzon getting the last touch for Hanwood.
Despite Hillston having the bulk of possession in the last 10 minutes, and firing a handful of shots that flirted with the goal, Hanwood FC hung on for their breakthrough win.
It was a bad weekend for Hillston after they also lost to Yoogali Soccer Club 2-0, while in the other game for the round, Leeton United proved too good for Hay, winning 1-0.
