Elite football comp gets the thumbs up

02 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
COBRAM Victory coach Craig Carley and new Shepparton South mentor Connor Campbell have both tentatively supported a proposed Country Super League, drawing leading clubs from the region's soccer competitions.

Goulburn North East Football Association and Griffith District Amateur Football Association released a 32-page document in December outlining details for a planned elite competition.

It has been distributed to GNEFA, GDAFA and Albury-Wodonga clubs and could be released to Bendigo clubs in the future.

Clubs need to be approved by GNEFA for the competition that the document states, wants to be the best competition outside of the A-League and metropolitan Premier League.

The concept has stemmed from the inequality within the top-flight GNEFA men's and women's competitions.

Carley, an import to the competition from England, said he could see the merit in beginning a higher standard competition.

"There were teams last season, and this is with no disrespect to Benalla or Kialla, where teams were beating sides 20-0,'' Carley said.

"That is no fun for anyone involved.

"In this new competition, games would be a lot tighter and the competition overall would be more competitive.

"That is good for everyone.''

The competition is set to start with a men's competition next year, dependent on how much interest is received from clubs by the January 16 deadline.

A women's competition is planned to be introduced in 2013 and a Youth League the following year.

Clubs will be informed if their submissions have been successful by January 31, with the inaugural competition to kick off in March or April.

Campbell said the implementation of the competition could be made easier by using the lighting facilities at McEwen Reserve.

Up to 12 teams will be eligible for the first year, with eligible clubs or teams needing to have senior men, senior women, under 18s, four junior teams (under 11 to under 16) and two small-sided teams (under 6 to under 10) in their individual competitions.
