City takes comfortable win

30 Aug, 2010 12:00 AM
WITH finals football passing Griffith City FC and Hanwood Juniors by for 2010, the joint-venture club took bragging rights into the off-season with a solid 2-0 win at Exies Oval on Saturday night.

Both sides finished well off the pace of Wests Soccer Club, who secured the last finals spots several weeks ago, but the win should see Griffith City take some positives into the off-season after being, at times, more than competitive in its first season.

The main problem for Juniors, as it has been the past two seasons, has been the lack of flair in front of goal, with the side desperately needing a star striker.

Heading into the weekend Juniors had scored the fewest goals in first grade (14) with Leeton United in front with (17) and as a result had the worst goal difference (-40).

Juniors coach Dino Carusi said if his side was able to convert its good play into scoreboard pressure, then it would have a dramatic affect on their confidence.

"We definitely need strikers; if we had a good striker that could put a goal away that would be a big lift," Carusi said.

"When we're on top of the other team and we can get a goal because of that then we'll be right, because at the moment we're playing well in the first 10, 15, 20 minutes but we can't score."

Griffith City took advantage of a patched up Juniors side, to never seriously be challenged, to run out comfortable winners, which allowed them to finish fifth.

"I thought we started off quite well and there was some good runs being made up the front by Scotty Keith and Stuart Whitecross out wide," City coach Ross Panebianco said.

"We penetrated quite well and I think we deserved our lead."

Whitecross got his side's nose in front in the 20th minute when he finished off a solid team play, and when Erdinc Kurt cooly slotted home a penalty the game petered out to see City snare the points.

"I said to my guys, I don't care if it's the first game or the last game you go out there to play every game to win, you're here because you like playing," Panebianco said.

"So I told them to get out there and push for the win because pride's important, so I was pleased in that regard, we got the result and can finish the season off in a nice way."

Carusi said the long season had taken its toll on his squad, with a number of injuries and unavailabilities forcing him to improvise in his line-up.

"Last night (Saturday) we didn't have our full team, we only had seven fresh starters and our regular goalkeeper couldn't play so we had Luke Ellis in goal," he said.

"We didn't have some guys because of work commitments, so it was a horrible weekend all round."

However, next season the abundance of talent in the club's under 17s will be handy for senior football with much of the team soon to be too old for the age group.

The Juniors' 17s have only been beaten twice this season and are white-hot favourites to take out the premiership, with Yoogali Soccer Club their main threat.
