Top-flying Swans Narrandera bound

29 Feb, 2008 08:36 AM
Added to the talented twosome, are the likes of Leo Barry, who will be spreading his wings for the first time in the Swans premiership campaign for 2008, and Ryan O’Keeffe and Paul Bevan who were rested from last weekends game against Port Adelaide.

The added star-power is a huge boost for the area, which will for the second year in a row, get to see some of the biggest names in the sport in their own back yard.

Richmond has followed suit naming an equally impressive squad, featuring superstars Matthew Richardson, Brett Deledio, Troy Simmonds and Nathan Brown.

Swans coaching co-ordinator John Longmire said the side was getting

down to the business of getting back deep into the finals series, with last seasons

first round ejection at the hands of Collingwood still hurting many of the players.

“We have played in the finals series for the last five years in a row, and to be knocked out in the first week was a bit of a disappointment,” Longmire said.

“But with the long pre-season, we have been able to have this year, we have been able to give more game time to most of the guys that will be starting the year.

“All of the guys that can play - will play.”

The only two big names to miss tonight’s big game are Tadhg Kenelly and Jarrod Crouch who are expected to be back within a week.

Longmire, who was recently anointed by current head coach Paul Roos as his likely successor, said the whole squad was looking forward to going back to Narrandera, saying last year’s game left a positive imprint on the club.

“We really enjoyed the game last year, the way the local people get behind the game, you could feel the atmosphere around the place when you walked in there,” he said.

“And when we heard we were going back there this year, there was nothing but enthusiasm.”

Longmire said they expected a tough contest against the Tigers, in a game he labelled as a “full scale dress rehearsal” for the year ahead.

“From what we have seen they have named a strong squad for the game, because we are getting towards the back end of the preseason,” he said.

“They have most of their big players from Matthew Richardson down, so it will be great opportunity for people to get really close to some of the biggest names in the game.”

The Swans are coming off a solid last start win over an undermanned Port Adelaide, with Hall kicking four goals in the Swans 69-point win.

While Richmond will have a point to prove this year after finishing with the dreaded wooden spoon, but they look to be on the improve with a comfortable 35-point win over Melbourne last weekend.
