 New recruits buoy Blues

New recruits buoy Blues

06 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
COLEAMBALLY has moved to strengthen its defensive six in a big way with the signing of two key position defenders.

Blues president Shane Mannes announced the club has snared the signatures of Simon Mackie and Rodney Evans for the looming Farrer League season.

"They are both pretty big gets for us," Mannes said.

"Rodney will probably play fullback and free up Carl Pound a little bit, and Simon plays as a third tall back.

"We are very happy to get them both."

Evans comes to the club from playing with Barellan in the Northern Riverina Football League, getting in contact with the Blues through a friend.

Mackie played all his juniors at Narooma but has spent the past two years switching between Queanbeyan Tigers' division one and two teams in the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL).

Mackie will most likely play across halfback for the Blues but has also agreed to help coach Andrew McGown out as assistant coach.

The 24-year-old has only ever coached up to under 17 level and said he is looking forward to taking on a new challenge.

"I've only coached a bit of juniors so I'm pretty excited about it all," Mackie said.

"I've been down there (to Coleambally) and met a fair few of the boys and all the players seem pretty keen for the season."

Mackie decided to make the move to Coleambally to live with his partner, and approached the football club before Christmas, asking whether there was a spot in the team for him.

"There seems to be a really good atmosphere around the club," he said.

"I haven't got a job lined up yet, I'm not sure what I'll do.

"A couple of the boys there have told me they can find work for me which is good of them."

Mackie works as an engraver in Queanbeyan but says it would be difficult to find engraving work in Coleambally.

He plans to make the move to Coleambally in the next couple of weeks and says he is keen to get a good look at the quality of the Farrer League.

Coleambally has lost former coach Shaun Brooker and young Will Brain but will welcome back locals Jay Pound, Jason Heath and Hayden Heath this season.
