It’s a tough task, says Swans coach

After recording successive losses to begin the year, the Swans will be looking to give the flag-favourites a scare early on.

Robertson Oval has been a graveyard for the Swans in recent years, a fact Toscan said the side has acknowledged during the week.

“It is the toughest road trip in the competition, trying to win at Robertson Oval,” Toscan said.

“We have talked about our lack of success there, but we are the underdogs, they are the defending premiers, we are going into the game with nothing to lose.

“We respect them, despite the fact we hate them, but at the same time we don’t hold them in awe.”

Last weekend against Coolamon, the Swans showed signs of what they are capable of when they were able to dictate terms with their running game, with goal scoring surges in the second and third quarters giving them hope of picking up their first win of the year.

Toscan said he expected the Tigers would play the same style of game that has seen them rise to the top of the RFL, but also said his sides hard running game would have to be stepped up again.

“From what I have heard they have had a fair turn over of players from last year, but they still look to have a young, talented side,” he said.

“By the looks of it they have a fair few guys from last year’s third grade side, which only lost the grand final by a kick.

“But what we do know is they go hard at the ball, they always do, and they are amongst the most skillful sides in the competition.

“Their foot passing and their hand passing skills are good, so it’s a matter of trying and putting them under pressure once we get the ball.”

A lack of big men hurt the Swans against the Grasshoppers last weekend, with Sean Curren having to be taken out of his favoured full-forward role to plug defensive gaps back down the field.

However, Toscan is expecting a raft of big man back in the red and white jersey sooner rather than later.
