Unlikely win for Diggers

06 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
A SPIRITED effort with with the ball from Diggers has seen them sew up a nail-biting 11-run victory against Coleambally Nomads at Showground No.2 on Saturday.

After a below average effort with the bat set Nomads just 116 for victory, Diggers needed to pull off something special if they wanted to keep their slim finals chances alive.

And thanks to several excellent efforts with the ball, Diggers recorded their fifth win for the season as Coleambally's place in the top four begins to look shaky.

Batting first and Diggers would have had their minds on making at least 150 to test the normally strong Nomads' batting line-up, but it was the visitors that had the run of play early.

Grahame Lyons (4) and Brian Corner (3) were sent packing early before a 54-run stand between Thom Harper (31) and Teau Woetai (34) put their side back on track at 2-80.

But quick wickets from Tom Fuller (4-31) again pulled the game in his side's favour as Diggers crumbled through the middle-order to losing their next seven wickets for just 26 runs.

In the end their 115 was well short of the total they should have had after the good work from Harper and Woetai.

However, Matt Hogan got the ball rolling for Diggers when it came for their turn in the field as Nomads fell to be 4-29 and in deep trouble.

Graham O'Connell was the only Coleambally batsman that looked comfortable at the crease as he made 28 on the way to try and give the middle-order some respectability.

But Woetai completed his excellent overall game to secure four late wickets to help wrap-up the win for his side.

The Yenda Jets cruised to an easy 108-run victory against Yoogali to climb up into the fourth and final playoff spot.

Yoogali's season of misery continues as they slumped to their tenth loss for the year as they remain rooted to the bottom of the table, with a minor miracle needed if they are to avoid the wooden-spoon.

Yenda did not start well and lost their first four wickets for just 36 run before Matt Staines (23) and company starting the fight back as they finished on a very handy 159.

In response Yoogali's run chase never got out of first gear as only one batsman made it into double figures as they were bundled out for only 51.

A five-wicket haul by Hanwood's John Witherspoon laid the platform for his side's 65-run victory against Coro Cougars on Saturday.

Defending a modest 135, Hanwood needed early wickets to give themselves a better than average chance, with Witherspoon stepping up to the plate to cut down Coro's run chase.

Witherspoon's 5-21 off 7.4 enabled only two Coro batsmen to make it into double figures as Jamie Bennett top-scored with just 26.

Earlier in the day good efforts with the bat by Graham McGann (32) and Chris Patterson (21) saw Hanwood reach 135, with Dion Pascoe (3-33) the best of the Cougars with the ball.
